One of the most popular questions I get asked from couples getting ready and preparing for their engagement session is figuring out what to wear for engagement photos! It can be hard to figure out when it’s your first time getting behind the camera. I have created my top 5 things to consider when picking out your outfit for your photoshoot so you can feel prepared and ready to go!

Be You!

My recommendation is coordinate, but don’t match! We are no longer in the 90’s! Thank goodness we no longer have to do the jeans and white t-shirt look for all our photos. Think of outfits that go together but aren’t matchy, matchy! When you are figuring out what to wear for engagement photos remember to be yourself! If you don’t normally wear dresses and you would be uncomfortable wearing one then don’t! The best part is that you get to choose. Grab a pair of jeans instead. Plus, you will want to be able to move around so make sure to keep that in mind when planning your outfit.

Consider The Environment

Make sure when you are figuring out what to wear for engagement photos to dress for your location! It would make absolutely no sense if you were to wear jackets and lots of heavy layers with winter boots in the desert would it? So keep in mind and pay attention to the location and be true to your vibe!

Choose Your Colors

When you are choosing your outfits for your engagement photos make sure to pick colors that contrast to the location and do not blend in! You want to keep in mind where your photos will take place! If you are taking photos in the desert like these photos at Joshua Tree National Park you wouldn’t want to wear yellow or tan because you would blend into the background too much. Generally, the best rule of thumb for most photo backgrounds is to pick neutrals or earthy tones like olive green, dusty blue, grey, ivory, burnt orange, mauve or tan (and of course black and white!).

Dress For The Occasion

It is always important to keep in mind the weather and the season! The location isn’t the only thing you need to consider. Maybe you’ve planned a shoot on the Oregon Coast and it’s going to be chilly instead of the typical California beach weather you are used to you would want to wear things that are more reasonable to your location. Think off the shoulder sweater and cute high waisted jeans! Again, if you are going to the desert to take photos and it’s during the winter months add some layers! For example, a jean jacket, flannel, cute booties or a beanie! So many options! But, most importantly, you want to make sure that you are comfortable over everything else!

Think Textures and Accessories

Adding textures can be as simple as throwing in some denim, linen, wool, leather, fringe, necklaces or rings! All of these will help add overall texture to your outfits! This is what really showcases the real you. Plus, it brings variety to your photos. You can have some photos with your flannel, some without, some with your boho hat, or some without! This will increase the number of looks you have in your photos all together! Also, if you have accessories that have a lot of meaning to you – bring them! For example, if someone has a piece of jewelry or watch that is special to them it adds to the story of who you are and makes the photos that much more meaningful!

There you have it! Those are my top 5 tips on how you can figure out what to wear for engagement photos! If you have any questions at all please don’t hesitate to reach out. I can’t wait to see what you and your partner comes up with on your engagement or couples session!
